A man was going for a walk along a beach when he came across a group of starfish stranded on the shore, it was a warm day and they were drying out and dying. The man had stopped and was starting to pick up the starfish and put them back into the water when another man came along in the opposite direction. 'What are you doing,' he said, 'you can't possibly hope to make a difference.' The first man did not stop what he was doing and said in reply to the other, 'it made a difference to that one.'
